A top swimmer on Burnley College Sixth Form Centre's Elite Athlete programme has recorded five 'personal best' times in the 2019 regional swimming heats.
Dedicated Zak Smith-Shelley, a Sports Science student, smashed his previous record in the 400m, 200m and 50m freestyle, as well as the 100m backstroke and 200m IM, in the event which draws the region's top swimmers to the Manchester Aquatics Centre. He is a former student at Blessed Trinity RC College and lives in Colne.
Zak, a member of the Burnley Bobcats swimming team, trains more than 16 hours a week in his quest to reach the very top of his sport and represent GB in the Olympics in years to come.
As a member of the College's Elite Athlete programme, Zak receives specialist strength and conditioning coaching from sports industry professionals at College, helping him to reach his full potential and improve his performance. The Elite Athlete programme is open to students - on A Level or Advanced Level courses - who are already performing at a high level in their chosen sport - from rugby and athletics, through to hockey and swimming.
