Sports Science student Lucy aims to represent GB on the hockey pitch

An Advanced Level Sports Science student and Elite Athlete at Burnley College Sixth Form Centre is getting closer to her dream of representing the Great Britain team in hockey tournaments across the world.

Lucy Daye (16), a former pupil at Unity College, has been training and competing alongside some of the country's top young hockey players in national contests.and is on course to be one of the country's top players.

As a member of the Elite Athlete programme at College, Lucy receives additional support in strength and conditioning, as well as sports psychology and nutrition, making use of the state-of-the-art fitness testing lab and equipment at Fitness Evolution, the College's on-site fitness centre, alongside her studies.

Lucy has been playing hockey for 12 years and has represented teams in Clitheroe and Blackburn, as well as being a member of the Lancashire and North of England teams  and selected for the England Hockey pathway. She also trains during the week with the Academy of Sport female football team at College, under the guidance of ex-Burnley FC player Gerry Harrison.

She said: "Being on the Elite Athlete programme at College has really helped my strength and endurance and I've noticed it's really made a difference to my game. My stamina has really improved and I'm able to give my best performance on the hockey pitch. The Elite Athlete programme works well as I get to use the specialist equipment at Fitness Evolution so I can really tailor my training to make it more effective and I get help and advice from former professional athletes who work there."

With her goal of representing Great Britain in hockey at the Olympics, Lucy is planning to study Sports Psychology at university after finishing her Advanced Level Sports Science course at Burnley College and is also considering a career in Sports Psychology.
