Elite and Academy of Sport Athletes join in charity run from Turf Moor to Old Trafford

A group of dedicated athletes who take part in the successful Elite Athlete and Academy of Sport programmes at Burnley College Sixth Form Centre braved the cold to help raise money for local charities.

The talented young sportsmen and women, who enjoy professional coaching in the college's state-of-the-art facilities in their chosen sport alongside their studies, ran alongside fund-raiser Scott Cunliffe, whose amazing charity efforts were featured on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year programme.

Scott has chosen to run from Turf Moor to all Burnley FC's away games in the Premier League this season, raising more than £10,000 for a variety of local causes through his efforts in the Run Away challenge.

The students completed the gruelling first leg of Scott's run to Old Trafford, Manchester, ahead of the Clarets clash with Manchester United, braving the snow and freezing temperatures to show their support, as well as their fitness. They were joined by several of their coaches, including former Burnley FC professionals Andy Payton and Gerry Harrison.

Seasoned runners Simon Jordan (deputy principal of Burnley College Sixth Form Centre) and Paul Whittaker (head of student services) accompanied Scott on the full 35-mile run, arriving in the early afternoon.

The sports offering at Burnley College Sixth Form Centre is outstanding, with Vocational and A Level programmes to help students pursue a career in the Sports or Fitness Industry and learn from experts, drawn from the field of professional sport. The Academy of Sport programme allows students with a passion for their chosen sport, whether that's football, netball, rugby or basketball, the opportunity to improve their skills with expert coaching and enjoy regular competitions. The Elite Athlete programme gives those students already performing at a high level in their chosen sport - from regional to international level - the opportunity to work with experts in strength and conditioning and make use of the high-tech fitness lab at Fitness Evolution, the college's on site, award-winning fitness facility, to hone they training routine and achieve optimum performance.
