The leaders of tomorrow: the Class of 2018 graduate in Burnley

It was a day of celebration for the University of Central Lancashire degree students, their industry-specialist lecturers and invited guests from industry and commerce who enjoyed a reception at their state-of-the-art Campus at Burnley College before heading to a prestigious graduation ceremony at the Mechanics Institute.

In her opening address at the graduation ceremony, Principal of Burnley College Karen Buchanan highlighted how continued investment from the College, Burnley Borough Council and the University of Central Lancashire was ensuring that Burnley was rapidly becoming a university town of which everyone should be proud. She highlighted how strong links with industry were ensuring students combined academic excellence with industry experience, and Lecturers drawn from the very top of their fields in industry were preparing students to be key influencers in their chosen sectors globally.

She said:

“Our Class of 2018 have excelled and achieved some of the highest degree classifications the College has seen, even above last year’s record high results.

“Our graduates are going on to make their mark in their chosen industries; to be leaders in their field and innovators, who will constantly strive to be the very best. They are drivers of change with an indomitable spirit.”

Guest speaker at the graduation ceremony was Andrew Henderson, Founder and Lead Consultant at Forward Thinking Ltd and entertainment was provided by former student Marco Galea, now a professional musician. The degree certificates were presented by Liz Bromley, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Central Lancashire. Other guests included members of the College’s governing body, local government officials, Burnley MP Julie Cooper and civic representatives from Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale and award-winning town crier Roland Hailwood.

Students were awarded degree in a wide range of subjects as well as post-graduate certificates and   Higher National Certificates and Diplomas, providing them with concrete opportunities to become leaders in their fields with the knowledge and innovation to make a difference.

At the ceremony three special awards were presented: Academic Excellence Award – Charlotte Cutt; Dissertation Award – Lauren Pointon; Employee Project Award – Kristian Tuff,
