Burnley College Sixth Form Centre students turn detective in fire service's HazMat van

Representatives from Greater Manchester Fire and Recsue Serrvice brought their high-tech HazMat vehicle to Burnley College Sixth Form Centre to give Advanced Level Applied Science and Public Services students a taste of forensic investigation.

The vehicle contains state-of-the art technology to detect, analyse and monitor potentially hazardous substances which could be released in accidents or cause concern to members of the public.

Students gained an insight into the role of officers deployed in the HazMat vehicle through a series of hands-on experiments using a variety of samples they had recovered from a crime scene previously staged by the fire officers.

The chance to tour the HazMat vehicle and talk about career opportunities with the fire service team is just one of the academic activities that take place outside the classroom for students.
