Join the Pre-Academy of Sport at Burnley College Sixth Form Centre and train alongside professional athletes

The college’s Academy of Sport and Elite Athlete programme is arranging a series of Pre-Academy taster sessions on Wednesday 14 February. It is an ideal opportunity for students who have applied to start academic courses in August – or are still considering their options – to experience the top-class coaching and outstanding facilities offered to the college’s top sportsmen and women.

There will be Pre-Academies in Football, Rugby, Netball, Basketball and Boxing (all open to both male and female students) led by professional, highly qualified coaches, including former Burnley FC players Andy Payton and Gerry Harrison, and title-winning Burnley boxer Shayne Singleton. During the Pre Academy, students will have the chance to work on their individual sport techniques, compete against current Academy players and improve their fitness.

Academy of Sport Manager at Burnley College Sixth Form Centre Ashley Alderson said:

“At Burnley College Sixth Form Centre we really can offer the best of both worlds to students who are passionate about sport.

“As well as outstanding teaching and individual support – whether that’s in A Levels or Advanced Level vocational courses – we offer the very best sports coaching and facilities. It’s the perfect way to continue developing sports skills and improving strength and fitness alongside your studies.”

He added:

“We’re delighted that Shane has agreed to coach the Boxing Pre-Academy this half term and pass on some of the advice and training tips that have seen him reach the top of his sport. Plus, Gerry and Andy bring the expertise and commitment of former professional football players to give our Academy footballers that extra edge.”

Boxer Shayne Singleton said:

“I’m honoured to be asked to join the Pre-Academy of Sport training programme and am looking forward to working with some great young boxing talent. It is a privilege to be able to pass on my skills to the next generation of boxers – and even those who see boxing training as a great way to stay fit. You never, know, we might see the next boxing champion of the world come from this Pre Academy!”
