The prestigious award was presented to Emily, a Burnley College Sixth Form Centre Advanced Level Health and Social Care student, during a glittering ceremony at Lancashire Police Headquarters in Hutton.

Over 50 young people were nominated for their dedication to voluntary work and Emily was highly commended for committing herself to her voluntary work in her local Brownies and Rainbows troupes, and for her work with children with special educational needs at Holly Grove school.

Emily was also commended for her volunteer work at Blackburn Hospital Children’s Ward, and at Sandpipers, a respite and holiday residential centre for adults with physical disabilities where her skills were put into practice taking residents on day trips to Blackpool, Liverpool and Manchester.

Judging the winning volunteers was the responsibility of the High Sheriff Amanda Parker, former High Sheriff Rodney Swarbrick and representatives from sponsors BAE Systems and the Lancashire Partnership against Crime (LANPAC).

High Sheriff of Lancashire Amanda Parker said: “We were delighted with the number and variety of entrants for this year’s prize. These awards are designed to celebrate the fantastic work young people like Emily do every day.”

Emily’s dream is to become a paediatric nurse and plans to continue volunteering and working with Blackburn Hospital and at Holly Grove school where she has been offered paid employment on the strength and high-standard of her work.

Emily’s tutor Emma Waters, who supported her application for the High Sheriff Young Citizen award said of her achievement:

“Emily always gives one hundred per cent in all her College work and extra-curricular activity. Burnley College Sixth Form centre has an extensive volunteering programme. In particular, we’ve been happy to support Emily’s work with Blackburn Hospital children’s ward and at Holly Grove school she has demonstrated her initiative as well as her commitment to supporting and working with children. She’s shown herself to be a caring, capable and hardworking member of every team she’s worked with and I’m sure she will make a fantastic paediatric nurse. ”

Principal Hugh Bramwell said:

“Emily’s achievements in both her academic work and her volunteering are exceptional as is her continued commitment to her voluntary work with children and vulnerable people in the local area. With the support of her tutors in the Health and Social Care division she has developed her specialist skills and we are very proud she selected Burnley College Sixth Form Centre for her studies. Emily’s is a real asset to Burnley College Sixth Form Centre and we’re all sure she will continue to make a real difference to people’s lives.”
