Burnley College Sixth Form Centre has a range of sports academies that have continued to excel in regional and national championships throughout 2013. All teams are performing higher than any other Lancashire College. Successes include:
We were the highest performing College football team in East Lancashire when our 1st XI finished 3rd place in the British College’s Elite League. The team also reached the quarter finals of the Men’s National Cup for the second consecutive year. Our 2nd XI were champions of the British Colleges Performance League and our 3rd XI came 4th in the British Colleges Division 2. First Team goalkeeper Marko Marosi is currently on trial with Wigan Athletic FC and student Chris Bailey has since secured a semi-professional contract with Nantwich Town and was selected as a regional finalist in Nike’s The Chance contest.
A successful 2012/13 campaign was capped off for the college’s Burnley Blaze basketball team by winning the North West Regional Championship. This followed success at the National Finals in Bath, where the team ended the competition as third place play-off winners for the second consecutive year. The team also reached the quarter-finals of the British Colleges and England Basketball Cup, where we were the highest performing team in the North of England. Student Ajay Cheema was awarded by progressing onto a basketball scholarship at Oakland Community College in Michigan, USA, and coach Malcolm Leak was also named as England Basketball Division 4 Coach of the Year.
Burnley College’s Women's Football Academy had a successful 2012/13 campaign by finishing as the highest performing seven a side team in East Lancashire by coming 2nd Place in the Women’s Division 2 North league.
