From University Student to Member of Staff: Kimberley's Story

Name: Kimberley Gorton

Age: 39

Studied: Education Top-Up degree

From: Burnley

Formerly: Foundation Degree – Children & Young People Services. Foundation Entry – Community & Social Care Policy & Practice.

After successfully completing her Foundation Degree studies in Children & Young People & Services, Kimberley Gorton chose to top-up her qualifications to degree level by taking an Education strand. A former pupil of Walshaw High, Kimberley returned to education after she had her family. She intends to progress to a Masters in Education and a PGCE in 14+ Education and ultimately hopes to be a Tutor in University.

Returning to study as an Adult learner, Kimberley chose to study at University Courses Burnley because of its proximity to home – making it easier for her to juggle family life with her studies. A mother of two teens this access, along with fantastic support from tutors, was vital for her to go back into education. So supportive were the staff that when a job opportunity arose in Burnley College as a Learning Support Assistant, Kimberley was encouraged – successfully - to apply. She now gains invaluable practical experience alongside her studies whilst helping her finances. Kimberley is greatly appreciative of the guidance she has received from her tutors both academically and in her personal development.
