Advanced Level Sports students from Burnley College Sixth Form Centre used their skills and knowledge to host a seven-a-side girls' football tournament for local primary school pupils.
The big event, hosted on the College's all-weather pitches, formed part of the English Schools Football Association week-long national promotion and formed part of the College's successful Schools Sport Partnership, encouraging fitness and healthy habits from a young age.
Some 120 girls from Years 3 and 4 at 12 schools took part in the tournament, which was led by the highly-motivated Sports students who designed the fixtures; refereed; collected the results and calculated the winners as part of their course assessment. The students have already run the Lancashire FA Boys Football qualifiers for Burnley; a Fundamentals Festival for local primary school children and a physical development programme for local children with special educational needs.
The 12 local primary schools taking part were:
- St John the Baptist RC, Padiham,
- St Augustine's RC,
- Holy Trinity CE
- St Stephen's CE
- St Leonard's CE
- St Mary Magdalene's RC
- St Mary's RC
And the winners on the day were Cliviger; St John’s Padiham and Holy Trinity!
