Burnley College Sixth Form Centre has consolidated its position as one of the North’s leading sport and fitness colleges by being awarded the prestigious TASS (Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme) accreditation.
The College sees its athletes compete at national and international level in a variety of sports, as well as progressing to top universities to study sports science-related subjects and take up careers in the sport and fitness industries at the highest levels. It is now one of only a handful of Colleges and Universities nationwide recognised for its pioneering work to ensure students on the pathway to sport and fitness success have the opportunity to gain outstanding academic qualifications alongside their sporting pursuits and follow other interests and personal development.
Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, a former wheelchair athlete who is now a member of the House of Lords and sports presenter, with a special interest in maximising opportunities for the nation’s young athletes, said:
“We have a duty to help young people achieve their potential, while prioritising their welfare, wellbeing and education. For the vast majority of athletes, skills and formal qualifications are needed to help them find alternative careers, either alongside their sporting activities or once their sporting days are over.
“For me the TASS Dual Career Accreditation Scheme is vitally important to ensure all athletes have the chance to pursue an education and enjoy a more well-rounded approach to life.”
As a Dual Career Accredited Site, Burnley College Sixth Form Centre staff have completed comprehensive assessments and training to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to maximise opportunities for talented athletes through individualised academic support including flexibility to:
- Access online notes or resources
- Arrange catch up sessions with Tutors
- Reschedule deadlines
- Alter exam dates in exceptional circumstances.
This is in addition to the individualised academic support each student receives from expert, passionate Tutors at Burnley College Sixth Form Centre alongside specialist careers advice and guidance from highly-qualified National Careers Service staff and support in completing UCAS applications for university-level study.
Karen Buchanan, Principal of Burnley College Sixth Form Centre, said:
“Burnley College Sixth Form Centre is rapidly earning a reputation as one of the North’s leading sports colleges, with the professional Tutors, facilities and ambition that can give students the competitive edge they need to compete at the highest level in their chosen sport.
“Our Elite Athlete programme for students who are competing at regional, national or international level is hugely popular with a bespoke package of individualised support including physiotherapy, nutritional advice, lifestyle support, psychology and strength and conditioning training.
“This prestigious TASS accreditation highlights how, as a College, we combine a focus on sport with outstanding academic provision, giving all our talented athletes every opportunity to achieve the very best results possible in their A Level and Vocational studies and progress to top universities and successful careers in their chosen sector.
”Much work has gone into securing this accreditation. It shows the commitment our staff have to ensuring we are truly an exceptional college for sport and fitness provision, attracting talented young athletes from across the region to combine the very best sports and fitness provision with outstanding teaching and learning.”
