You will learn how to prepare and mount timber, create a range of turning techniques, and produce decorative and functional turned items such as bowls, platters, and spindle work. Assessment

Assessment for the Level 1 Award in Creative Craft (Woodturning) is primarily practical and portfolio-based, allowing learners to demonstrate their skills through the production of wood turned items and supporting evidence gathered throughout the course.

Learners are typically assessed through:

• Practical workshop activities demonstrating safe and effective use of tools, equipment, and materials.
• Completed woodturning projects that show the application of techniques, craftsmanship, and creative design.
• Portfolio of evidence containing photographs of completed work, design ideas, planning documents, sketches, and records of the making process.
• Observation by the tutor/assessor of practical skills and safe working practices during workshop sessions.
• Questioning and discussion to confirm understanding of techniques, materials, health and safety requirements, and the creative process.
• Learner reviews and reflective evaluations of completed work, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.

There are no formal written examinations. Assessment is continuous throughout the programme, enabling learners to build evidence of achievement while developing confidence and practical competence in woodturning.

Successful completion requires learners to meet the learning outcomes and assessment criteria specified for the qualification and to present a portfolio that demonstrates both practical skills and underpinning knowledge.
